A statue of Bridget Jones has been unveiled in London.

The artwork was revealed by the actor Renee Zellweger, who plays her in the films, along with the writer of the novels, Helen Fielding.

The character follows in the footsteps of Harry Potter and Paddington Bear in being honoured with a statue.

The piece in London's Leicester Square is the first of its kind to be dedicated to a romantic comedy.

It's being unveiled to mark twenty-five years since the first Bridget Jones film.

Speaking to us at the unveiling, Renee, who has played her in all four films told us she never expected to be turned into a statue:

"I was just hoping not to get fired!"

Renee says she feels lucky to have played her:

"She's so much fun, to spend time in her world, and live in her shoes a little while, and the reunions each time with my extended Bridget family, it doesn't get any better."

British author Helen Fielding created the character of Bridget Jones and wrote the novels the films were based on.

She tells us why she thinks Bridget has such enduring appeal:

"We all have this huge gap between what we feel we are supposed to be and how we actually are inside, so to have a character who can't do anything special she's just a person, with all the mess and chaos that goes with that, still be around and people feel affection for her, after three decades that's a lot."

She says at her centre, the character is a good person, with a good heart and good friends.

Bridget will be a permanent feature in the square - near bronze versions of Mr Bean, Mary Poppins, along with Harry Potter.
