Major flat fire in Mitcham tackled by 125 firefighters
Residents displaced following extensive townhouse blaze
A significant fire engulfed a block of townhouses converted into flats on Belgrave Walk in Mitcham, prompting a robust response from the London Fire Brigade.
Twenty fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters worked to control the blaze that spread across three floors and into roof spaces on Saturday (25th July).
Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha commended the crews for their efforts amidst challenging conditions, emphasising the continued presence of firefighters to manage hot spots and ensure full extinguishment.
Firefighting efforts were bolstered by drones and a 32-metre turntable ladder, aiding those working in hard-to-access areas and at height.
Around 35 residents have been displaced and are receiving assistance, with a rest centre established at a local church and community engagement teams providing support.
The alarm was raised at 15:10, with fire crews from Sutton, Wallington, Wandsworth, and other stations swiftly deployed to the scene.
The fire was declared under control by 17:52.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
