London Fire Brigade urges public to curb grass fires after busiest day of 2026
Heatwave conditions see record number of incidents
As temperatures exceeded 30°C in London, the Fire Brigade experienced its busiest 24-hour period in 2026 on 29th July, dealing with the highest number of grass fires recorded so far this year.
Firefighters responded to over 500 incidents, with 218 calls related to grass fires, including 63 separate fire occurrences across London.
Notable incidents occurred in north-east London, with Havering recording the most grass fires at 47, and Barking and Dagenham following with 16.
Assistant Commissioner Andy Pennick commended firefighters for their tireless efforts in difficult conditions and stressed the need for public involvement in preventing fires.
Residents are urged to avoid disposable barbecues in parks, properly dispose of cigarettes, and reduce combustible materials around homes to help minimize fire risks.
Taking precautions and practicing fire safety can significantly reduce the threat to homes, wildlife, and the environment.
The Brigade maintains emergency cover by monitoring calls and deploying resources effectively, utilizing Terrain Support Vehicles and water rescue teams to address grass and wildfire threats.
Pennick emphasized the importance of community awareness, encouraging everyone to take extra care to safeguard their surroundings during such critical conditions.
