DJ, a resident in the East End, shared his frightening experience with a hand fan purchased online, which burst into flames upon first use.
Similar incidents include a hand fan explosion in Thamesmead and fires in Erith, Southwark, and Plumstead caused by floor-standing fans left on for extended periods.
Station Commander Rob Hill emphasised the importance of choosing products that adhere to UK safety standards and shared tips for safe usage.
The Brigade advises against unattended fan operation, overnight usage, and second-hand product purchases.
All electric fans should have a UK 3-pin plug and fuse, and smoke alarms should be installed throughout homes.
The Office for Product Safety & Standards is being informed to address these concerns.
