Industry leaders to meet to discuss future of Oxford Street
They're coming together for the first time to discuss development of the famous road in the Capital
Industry leaders will meet for the first time today to discuss the future development of Oxford Street in London.
The Mayor of London is bringing together the Oxford Street Development Corporation Board in a bid to drive transformation and growth in the area.
Sadiq Khan says he wants to move forward with bold proposals for the regeneration of Oxford Street with pedestrianisation set to be at the heart of the debate.
A newly appointed team will bring their cross-sector expertise together later including retail, property, leisure, fashion, music, theatre, media, law and politics
It comes following what the Mayor describes as overwhelming public and business support, with around 7 in 10 backing the his regeneration plans and two-thirds specifically supporting the idea of pedestrianising the street, detailed pedestrianisation proposals are now open for consultation until 16th January.
The Mayor says the latest data shows retailers racing to secure space on Oxford Street ahead of its long-anticipated transformation, with leasing momentum accelerating over the past year and Savills forecasting a record number of retail launches by the end of 2026.
The Mayor has also been working closely with Government on the necessary legislation to establish OSDC, following support from the London Assembly in July 2025, which took effect on 1st January
Today’s landmark first meeting of the new OSDC Board takes place at London’s City Hall to discuss their shared vision for Oxford Street, as well as the work to date and key priorities going forward.
The Mayor has appointed OSDC Board members to represent the relevant local authorities, including Council Leaders Richard Olszewski for Camden and Adam Hug for Westminster.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Today’s meeting is a major milestone in our work to revitalise the nation’s high street and create a truly world-class leisure destination.
“Bringing the diverse knowledge and insight of our new Board members together with Nabeel Khan’s regeneration expertise will help us to unlock Oxford Street’s true potential, as we continue building a better and more prosperous London for everyone.”
Incoming OSDC Chief Executive, Nabeel Khan, said: “Oxford Street is a powerhouse of London’s economy and a cultural touchstone for millions. To help shape its future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and an immense honour. I look forward to working with our partners to deliver a world-class destination that is welcoming, safe and commercially thriving.”
New West End Company’s Chief Executive, Dee Corsi, said: “The establishment of a Mayoral Development Corporation for Oxford Street is significant milestone in the street's ongoing evolution, acknowledging the vital economic, cultural and community role it plays here in the capital, and across the UK.
"It is now crucial that we move forward to deliver long-term, strategic change for Oxford Street and the wider West End. I look forward to working closely with Scott Parsons, Nabeel Khan, the Mayor of London, Westminster City Council and the Board, to represent the West End business community and shape a shared vision for Oxford Street's future.”
