A kilogram of ketamine has been seized by police in Chelmsford following a routine car stop.

Officers stopped a black Jaguar on Broomfield Road, shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

Police searched the car and found a large bag of white powder, suspected to be ketamine, hidden inside a carrier bag in the passenger footwell. Cannabis was also discovered in the door pocket of the vehicle.

Two men from Greater London, aged 23 and 29, were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of cannabis. They remain in custody.

In addition to drug-related offences, the 29-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of driving with excess drugs in his system.

Superintendent Ian Hughes said: “These arrests reflect a robust response to a growing concern where people are prepared to supply or use controlled substances that are designed for use by professionals in other settings.

“Ketamine is not a harmless party drug – it’s an illegal controlled substance. Possession can lead to arrest and prosecution, and misuse carries serious health risks.

“Our message is clear: don’t take any risks with drugs.”

Essex Police have also been supporting a national road safety policing operation throughout December. The campaign has targeted drink and drug drivers across the region in efforts to improve safety on local roads and neighbourhoods.
