Immersive show based on Matisse to come to London next year
The 360 degree show will feature some of the Frenchman's most famous paintings.
A 360 degree immersive show based on the work of 20th century French artist Henri Matisse is to launch in London next year.
Matisse: Joy will launch at Lightroom in King’s Cross on January 27 2027, from the makers of David Hockney: Bigger And Closer (Not Smaller And Further Away), which was previously shown at the venue.
The event will feature some of the artist’s best-known works from throughout his 60 years of working, such as The Snail, Blue Nudes, Joy of Life and The Dance, along with pictures of Matisse at work in Matisse Chapel in Vence, France.
The show has been created in consultation with art historian Ann Dumas and also presents artwork by British-Nigerian multi-disciplinary artist and designer Yinka Ilori, including a piece specially designed for Lightroom.
Director Tom Wexler said: “It was important for us to create a show that honours Matisse’s rigour and innovation whilst celebrating how accessible his art is.
“With Yinka Ilori’s stunning contributions, I feel we’ve created something truly inclusive for all ages; a story about pushing the expressive limits of visual art, and rendering emotions in pure colour.”
Lightroom senior producer Anna Schmitz said the show would celebrate “one of our greatest artists” and offer a “brand-new perspective on the creative process in a way which we hope will truly inspire”.
The venue, which features a 360 degree screen, is currently showing a similar production, David Bowie: You’re Not Alone, which focuses on the work of the Starman singer, and will show a piece based on Aardman Animations from October, called Larger Than Life: Starring Wallace And Gromit, Shaun And More.
Tickets for Matisse: Joy will go on sale on September 22nd.
