Brigade urges public caution to reduce risk during hot weather
As hot weather continues to grip London, the Fire Brigade responded to 1,345 incidents across the city over a busy weekend.
Control Officers handled 2,729 emergency calls between Friday and Sunday, with Saturday seeing the highest call volume of 1,122, resulting in responses to 473 incidents.
Significant fires included a large block of flats blaze in Mitcham and a grass fire in Rainham that ravaged 10 acres.
Other notable incidents involved fires at landmarks such as a basement in Aldwych, a bakery in Dollis Hill, flats in Tower Hamlets and Shepherd's Bush, and a detached property in Highgate.
The Brigade's fire boat crew also rescued a person near Battersea Pier in the Thames.
Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha praised firefighters for their diligent work, highlighting the readiness of specialist vehicles for wildfires and water rescue teams for emergencies across London’s extensive waterways.
The Brigade is urging Londoners to prevent incidents by exercising caution during outings to parks, open spaces, and waterways.
Avoiding disposable barbecues and responsible disposal of litter and smoking materials are key preventive measures.
With summer holidays underway, parents and caregivers are encouraged to discuss the dangers of open water with young people, stressing only swimming at supervised locations.
In case of water emergencies, the Float to Live method—remaining calm, floating, and seeking help—is recommended.
