Firefighters battle large grass fires in Romford as heatwave continues
Eight engines deployed to control widespread blazes
London Fire Brigade crews responded to two significant grass fires in Romford this afternoon as hot weather conditions persist.
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled the fire near Southern Way, damaging approximately four acres of grassland before being brought under control by 17:50.
Simultaneously, a separate blaze near Eastern Avenue West impacted around 30 acres, with additional eight fire engines and 60 firefighters deployed.
Station Commander Ryan Kerby reported significant traffic disruptions due to road closures and advised residents to keep windows closed to limit smoke exposure.
The Brigade utilised Terrain Support Vehicles for effective firefighting operations, equipped with off-road capabilities and misting lance technology.
The fires are under investigation as authorities continue to monitor demand during the heatwave, urging residents to avoid risky practices such as using disposable barbecues and improperly disposing of smoking materials.
Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha highlighted the importance of community responsibility in preventing wildfires, noting the lasting impacts on health and the environment.
