Four people have been taken to hospital after a fire at a four-storey sheltered accommodation block in Chiswick.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a fire on Brooks Road yesterday afternoon (Fri 9 Jan) at 16:25.

The fire affected a flat and corridor on the first floor.

Crews attended from Chiswick, Acton, Mitcham and surrounding fire stations.

Firefighters carried out multiple rescues of people within the building, including the usage of fire escape hoods.

Fire escape hoods

London firefighters were among the first in the UK to carry fire escape hoods when they were introduced in 2018 as part of improvements following the Grenfell Tower fire.

The hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people.

They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.

Fire under investigation

A rest centre has been set up locally for around 30 residents who have been impacted by the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 1805.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
