Amidst rising fear, hatred, and division both online and in the streets, the Mayor of London has introduced a new £900,000 fund aimed at supporting the capital's diverse communities.

Mayor Sadiq Khan's Loved and Wanted Fund is designed to offer financial backing to up to 15 community organisations across London.

Supporting London's Communities

The cash will enable these organisations to expand their work in connecting Londoners and offering vital support and advice.

Forming part of the Mayor's ongoing Loved and Wanted campaign, the network of spaces will foster relationships among people of different backgrounds.

This will include hosting community events and enhancing access to essential services such as mental health and financial support.

The aim is to encourage active community participation and break down societal barriers.

Celebrating Diversity

In tandem with the fund, the Mayor released a video celebrating London’s diversity, featuring a poem by Kareem Parkins-Brown.

This video stands in contrast to the recent far-right rally and reinforces London's values as political leaders attempt to undermine them.

The Loved and Wanted campaign previously facilitated collaboration with over 140 organisations, distributing more than £985,000 through various initiatives, including the Community Recovery Fund and National Lottery Community Fund.

Last weekend, 200 community groups held events under the Mayor's Community Weekend initiative.

Voices of Support

Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasised the importance of London remaining a welcoming city, saying:

“I know that many of our communities are feeling extremely worried after what took place on the capital’s streets on Saturday. We are seeing increased efforts to spread fear, division and hatred on our streets and online, but my message to Londoners and the rest of world is very clear – London is, and always be, a place for everyone.”

Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard, Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice, commented on the lasting impact of the fund:

“London will always be a place for everyone and this fund will help ensure the Loved and Wanted campaign leaves a lasting legacy for London’s communities."

Geethika Jayatilaka, CEO of London Plus, expressed the significance of the funded initiative:

“Every Londoner deserves not just to be here, but to feel they truly belong and are valued, seen, and celebrated. The Mayor’s Loved and Wanted Fund will be a key investment in building social cohesion.”
