Major redevelopment of Crystal Palace National Sports Centre approved
Transformative renovation set to rejuvenate historic sporting venue
A significant redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre is set to begin following formal approval of the planning application by the London Borough of Bromley.
This marks a major milestone for the historic sporting and community facility, welcoming substantial investment to improve its infrastructure.
The centre, first opened in South London in 1964, boasts an athletics stadium, swimming and diving pools, and a variety of indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Despite its storied history, which includes hosting the first Women's FA Cup final, the centre is in need of a major overhaul.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced redevelopments in summer 2023 aimed at upgrading the facility for the local community. The newly approved plans include refurbishing the 50m swimming and diving pools alongside improvements to indoor facilities, external pitches, and the athletics stadium.
Comprehensive Renovation Plan
The approved renovation is backed by over 15 national governing sports bodies and clubs, local political figures, and Historic England, all lauding the project for ensuring the centre is equipped for the future. Key aspects of the work include:
A complete refurbishment of the Grade II listed building, enhancing accessibility and providing new club spaces.
The creation of advanced sporting facilities such as a Padel centre, basketball courts, football pitches, and a full-size artificial multi-sports pitch.
The aquatic hall will now host shallow water, 25m and 50m swimming, and diving all on one level for the first time.
New indoor sports zones with an indoor 100m track, weightlifting area, and climbing centre.
A community space combining sports, leisure, and play, featuring a running track, basketball court, and outdoor gym.
A refurbished stadium with accessible seating.
Approximately covering a 15-hectare site, the project is expected to begin late 2026, aiming at a 98% reduction in carbon emissions through sustainable methods like photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps. Sadiq contributed £23 million from his Green Finance Fund in 2024, further promoting sustainable energy and eliminating fossil fuel dependency.
