A murder investigation has been launched after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in Islington, north London, police have said.
The teenager was stabbed at around 1pm on Tuesday on Westbourne Road.
Police were called to the scene along with paramedics, who treated the boy for a stab wound.
But despite the best efforts of the medics, the boy died in hospital this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
His family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police remained at the scene on Wednesday morning, as forensic officers searched nearby streets.
Flowers had been laid on Westbourne Road at the edge of the police cordon as local residents gathered to pay respects.
Resident Dior Williams, 21, told the Press Association: "I feel like there's a lot of gangs around here, and it's just gotten a lot worse over the years.
"I did use to feel really safe here, but recently not so much. There's always something happening. There was someone that got murdered here a few years ago at the same spot, so it's really sad."
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in the local area, said: "We understand this is incredibly concerning for the community, particularly considering the young age of the victim.
"Officers are in the area carrying out urgent inquiries and cordons remain in place.
"I would urge anyone who saw the incident or has any information to please get in touch with us, or do so anonymously through Crimestoppers."
