Witnesses sought after fatal crash on M53 near Clatterbridge
Collision investigation continues with road closures in place
Authorities are appealing for witnesses following a fatal accident involving a pedestrian on the M53 motorway early this morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 3.25am on Monday, 15th June, near Junction 4 at Clatterbridge.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a collision between a Toyota Yaris and a male pedestrian in his 40s on the northbound lane.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family has been informed, with support from specially trained Family Liaison Officers.
The Toyota Yaris driver remained at the scene following the collision.
Initial inquiries have revealed that, shortly before the accident, the pedestrian was involved in another collision on the southbound carriageway when his Skoda Fabia collided with the central reservation.
A full closure of the motorway is in place on both northbound and southbound lanes between Junctions 4 and 5 to facilitate the investigation.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit urged witnesses to come forward, saying, "My thoughts are with the man’s family at this tragic time and specially trained officers are supporting them. An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of what happened."
He continued, "Although this occurred in the early hours of the morning, we are still appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have information."
Commuters who travelled on the M53 in either direction between Junctions 4 and 5 during the incident timeframe are encouraged to check their dashcam footage for any potentially vital information, even if they didn't witness the collisions.
Detective Sergeant Roper added, "Road closures will remain in place on both sides of the motorway whilst we carry out vital collision investigation work to provide answers for the man's family. If possible, I would ask that motorists find alternative routes and avoid the area. Thank you for your patience."
