Armed police called to Skelmersdale after reports of man with rifle
A number of homes were evacuated after officers found a 'grenade-type device' at a property in the area
A man has been arrested after armed police were called to reports of someone with what was believed to be a rifle in Skelmersdale.
Police were called to Beechwood Court in the Birkrig area at around 9am on Wednesday (29 July).
Armed officers and the police helicopter were sent to the scene.
A 47-year-old man from Skelmersdale was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.
He remains in police custody.
Replica grenade found
At around 7.15pm the same day, officers searched a property in the Birkrig area and found a grenade-type device.
Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team examined it and it was found to be a replica.
A small number of nearby flats were evacuated while the device was being assessed.
Residents have since been allowed to return home, and officers have thanked them for their patience and understanding.
Investigation continues
Police say officers remain in the area while enquiries continue.
A Skelmersdale Police spokesperson said "We know this will be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that an investigation is ongoing, and our officers remain in and around the area. If you have any concerns or information, please don’t hesitate to approach them."
