Firefighters tackle large blaze in Formby dunes

Crews from multiple services work to contain the fire

Firefighters were called to a significant fire in the sand dunes near Albert Road in Formby during the evening of 12th August 2026.

Six fire engines attended the scene at 8.00pm to tackle the blaze, initially measuring 300 by 300 metres.

To manage the fire, crews deployed beaters and hoses, establishing water supplies across a considerable distance.

By 10.15pm, the fire had expanded due to windy conditions, reaching dimensions of 500 by 200 metres.

Efforts to contain the blaze continued, involving multiple seats of fire within thick gorse bush and dunes.

Firefighters deployed extended hose reels and utilised a service drone for aerial situational awareness.

An engine from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service provided additional support under mutual cross-border arrangements.

Crews also utilised an off-road vehicle to approach the fire from the beach side.

The main body of fire has been extinguished, with teams checking for remaining hot spots to ensure complete control.
