A large fire at a recycling facility in Widnes has been brought under control after significant efforts by the emergency services.

The fire had erupted at a single-storey building on Everite Road, with 700 tons of waste cardboard igniting and causing a heavy smoke plume.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by crews from surrounding areas, worked tirelessly to tackle the blaze, using high volume pumps and other equipment.

Throughout the incident, residents and businesses nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

Road closures around Everite Road, Hale Road, and Ditchfield Road remain in place, with Cheshire Police managing traffic and advising motorists to avoid the area.

By midnight, the major incident status was lifted, as firefighters successfully contained the fire.

Crews have continued to work overnight to cool down burning debris using water jets.

While the fire is now well controlled, it is likely road closures will remain in place as the cleanup efforts continue.
