Unsafe toys seized to protect children in North East Lincolnshire
Counterfeit and dangerous toys have been removed from shelves
Trading Standards have confiscated over 1,700 toys from stores across North East Lincolnshire this summer due to safety concerns and potential counterfeiting.
These items included action figures, stuffed toys, and squishy toys, many of which lacked safety marks or were dangerously constructed with faulty battery storage and electrical wiring.
The seizures were part of ongoing enforcement activities, including a day at the Cleethorpes Armed Forces weekend where approximately 750 toys and products were confiscated.
Squishy toys, which have garnered national attention for potential harm to children, were frequently found among the unsafe items.
Across the UK, Trading Standards services are focused on identifying and removing products that don't meet safety standards, such as those without CE marking or that breach trademarks.
Under the Toy (Safety) Regulations 2011, all toys must display necessary safety information, including manufacturer and importer details, product identification, compliance marks like the CE mark, and safety warnings.
Councillor James Sawkins, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, emphasised the importance of safety: “It’s quite surprising just how many unsafe toys have been seized.
“The team have done an excellent job in ensuring the safety of visitors and residents – something that is a priority for myself and the Council."
Sawkins urged vigilance, adding, “If a toy is cheaper than usual, it’s very likely it hasn’t undergone the same safety testing that a reputable company would do on their products, to ensure they are safe for children to play with.”
He encouraged the public to report suspicious products, as action requires such reports to be made.
