Donald Trump will become the most powerful man in the western world later today.

His inauguration ceremony will see him sworn in this afternoon.

It'll be held indoors because of cold weather.

The new president's vowing to 'end what he's describing the reign of a failed and corrupt political establishment'.

But what is the impact of his policies likely to be on the UK?

He can reduce or eliminate US support for Ukraine

We've been speaking to Dr Mike Slaven, associate professor for international politics at the University of Lincoln.

He told us: "Government's are probably very worried about what Trump is going to do to NATO."

"Congress won't allow him to withdraw from NATO but he can make very unrealistic demands on the allies."

"He can reduce or eliminate US support for Ukraine which countries in Europe see as being essential to upholding the security order in Europe."

It's certainly putting the US into uncharted territory

How it affect America:

"It's going to put the US into the same contentious atmosphere as his first presidency but the difference is he's worn down some of the opposition right now."

"It's certainly putting the US into uncharted territory. "

His status as a convicted felon:

"We have the very unusual position of a convicted felon about to take office which people in the UK ask me - how is it even possible?"

Maybe about 40 per cent of voters love him and would support him no matter what

"And the answer is it's not explicitly against the rules but I think it make the US look as not as serious about democracy as maybe it would have looked a few months ago much less a decade ago. "

Why he was elected:

"There's a lot of people who love him - maybe about 40 per cent of voters love him and would support him no matter what."

"Then there's another group of people who aren't keen on his behaviour but think that in his first presidency the economy - in their reminiscence - was good so maybe give him another shot."
