Union urges Government to step in as Lindsey Oil Refinery faces closure
Workers have been told the site's future is now at serious risk
The future of one of the UK’s key oil refineries is in doubt, with Unite the Union calling on the government to act now to save jobs and protect the regional economy.
Managers overseeing the Lindsey Oil Refinery, which was placed into administration last month, have told staff they’re winding down operations after failing to find a buyer.
No more crude oil is being purchased, and workers have been told the site's future is now at serious risk.
"premature decision"
Unite's General Secretary Sharon Graham said the government must reverse what she calls a “premature” decision to halt crude oil deliveries and give more time to find a long-term solution.
She said: “The Lindsey refinery is critical national infrastructure and is essential for the UK’s fuel supply and the health of the regional economy.
“Over a thousand workers rely on the future of the oil refinery, their jobs are now at immediate risk, through no fault of their own.
"If the government fails to act then workers at Lindsey and much further afield will rightly, feel abandoned by it.
The union says jobs at the site, as well as in its supply chain, are at immediate risk, and that confidence in the government’s net zero strategy is rapidly eroding among oil industry workers.
The government have previously said they're working to resolve and address issues.
