Police are appealing for information after two dogs attacked a vulnerable seal pup on Mablethorpe beach.

It happened around 5.30am on Tuesday, 12th August and was reported to the force by an eyewitness.

They said both dogs were nipping at the seal with the owner eventually managing to get one dog on a lead. However the second – wearing a red muzzle – continued to attack, according to the witness.

They added that the owner was forced to stand over the seal to prevent further injury.

DC Aaron Flint, is Lincolnshire Police's wildlife crime officer, he said:

“Coastal areas are home to vulnerable wildlife. If your dog does not have a reliable recall, it must be kept on a lead at all times, especially in areas where vulnerable wildlife may be present.

“There is no excuse for allowing dogs to harass or injure wild animals, and we will take robust enforcement action where the law has been broken.

“Seals and other marine wildlife are protected under UK law.

"Initiatives such as Op Seabird, which focuses on the protection of coastal and marine wildlife, encourage responsible behaviour and highlight the consequences of wildlife disturbance.

"By keeping pets under control and observing from a safe distance, we can help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all coastal animals."

DC Flint is urging anyone who has information that could assist with the investigation to email [email protected] quoting 25000477742
