Teen landlady brings fresh ideas to village pub
18-year-old Neve Baker-Wright wants to change how young people see their village pub
An 18-year-old has taken over the lease of her village pub — and says she’s determined to attract a younger crowd, while keeping locals on side.
Neve Baker-Wright became landlady of the New Inn at Folkingham, near Grantham, in August. She says the support she’s had from the community has been overwhelming.
“I wasn’t sure if they’d be a bit apprehensive with me only being 18, but no, they’ve all been so supportive," said Neve.
"They’ve given advice where it’s needs to be given. They’ve helped where they need to help. They’ve just had a really good reaction.”
Neve hopes her age and energy will help change perceptions of pubs among young people.
“I think the decline of pubs can be turned around, and I think we can make it more appealing.
"When the younger generation think of pubs, they just think of a load of older people sat in there drinking, and actually there’s a very good atmosphere in a pub.
"I do hope, with me being so young, I can bring in that younger generation, but also, I think I’m hoping to raise quite a bit of awareness.
"You’ve got to support your local businesses, because if you don’t support you’re going to lose them.”
To encourage younger visitors, Neve is planning cocktail nights and live music, while also making sure long-standing regulars feel at home.
