A Lincolnshire RAF sergeant is taking on the Lincoln 10K with a 16kg wheelie bin strapped to his back – and it’s already turning heads in his village.

Sergeant Jamie Green, from Welton, has been training on local streets ahead of Sunday’s race, with support pouring in from passers-by.

“I put it in the Facebook group and everybody in the village has just beeped me every time I’m running with the bin,” he said. “They absolutely love it.”

But while it might look entertaining, Jamie says the challenge is far from easy.

“The weight is hard enough, but it’s actually the awkward size of it,” he explained. “If the wind is up, it’s a nightmare… it’s literally like a sail.”

Jamie, who has served in the RAF for 22 years, says the challenge is about more than just fundraising.

“I struggled with some mental health at the time… I felt like I just needed some more fulfilment,” he said. “I wanted to do something out of the ordinary… something people would get on board with.”

He’s raising money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, which supports serving personnel, veterans and their families.

“I’ve seen the difference the Fund makes… it’s an amazing charity,” Jamie added.

With race day fast approaching, he’s hoping for one final push to hit his £1,000 target.

“If anybody wants to sponsor me… you’ll find me – there’s nobody else running with a bin,” he said.
