Public space protection orders in Stamford car parks extended
The extension comes after complaints about ‘nuisance drivers’ doing donuts at night
A public space protection order (PSPO) has been extended in a town following reports of drivers ‘doing donuts’ around car parks.
Members of South Kesteven District Council’s (SKDC) cabinet have approved a three-year extension to the PSPO in Cattle Market, the Meadows and Bath Row car parks in Stamford, following complaints from residents about inconsiderate driving at night.
The council said the PSPO is a way to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour by issuing fines to offenders of up to £100, or up to £1,000 if it goes to court.
Existing PSPOs must be reviewed every three years and the current PSPO was due to expire in October.
At a meeting on Tuesday, September 8, cabinet member for housing, Virginia Moran (Independent – Market and West Deeping) said: “By extending the PSPO and varying it to include new areas within the car park, this will allow the PSPO to act as a deterrent and prohibit vehicle related nuisance and anti-social behaviour.”
She added that if the PSPO had not been renewed, SKDC and Lincolnshire Police would have had a ‘limited ability’ to tackle this anti-social behaviour.
At a meeting last month, councillors heard that many residents had reported that ‘nuisance drivers’ had been ‘doing donuts’ in the three car parks.
