A new delivery service for overdose prevention kits started this week in North East Lincolnshire, run by the area's designated drug and alcohol support service, North East Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership.

The service delivers naloxone kits, a first aid medication capable of reversing the effects of an opioid overdose, to individuals at a location of their choice.

Naloxone is available in England from drug and alcohol services and some pharmacies, and anyone can carry a kit to use in emergencies.

The Click & Deliver programme aims to improve accessibility, particularly for people in remote areas or those who struggle with mobility.

After filling out an online form and optionally completing a training session, individuals receive a free naloxone kit by post in discreet packaging.

The North East Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership consists of Turning Point, Double Impact, and Framework.

It operates hubs in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, along with satellite sites and co-located services for those seeking assistance with substance use changes.

The postal service initiative follows Turning Point's pilot at its Somerset Drug and Alcohol Service and its subsequent roll-out across England.

The service has distributed over 700 naloxone kits to date.

Tina Holt, Harm Reduction Lead at North East Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership, highlighted the importance of naloxone, saying, “Naloxone buys time for an ambulance to arrive. I have used naloxone a few times and without it, the person may have passed away. Naloxone saves lives, be a life saver and carry naloxone.”

Elli-Jay McNally, National Harm Reduction Lead for Turning Point, stressed the urgency of naloxone distribution: “With the increasing risk from potent synthetic opioids, it’s never been more important to make it as easy as possible for people to access naloxone.

"By removing the barriers experienced by some, Click & Deliver helps us raise awareness and make sure we’re getting naloxone into the hands of the people who need it.”

Leah Briggs, Senior Operations Manager at North East Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership, added, “Naloxone saves lives, it’s as simple as that. The introduction of the Click & Deliver service ensures that people can access this vital medication anywhere in North East Lincolnshire, no matter where they live or what their individual circumstances are.

"You should think of naloxone in the same way you do a defibrillator – if you have naloxone on you, you can potentially save someone’s life.”
