Major Boston raids seize fake cigarettes and expose illegal working
Raids uncover counterfeit tobacco, undocumented workers and poor conditions above local shops
Two men have been arrested and large stashes of counterfeit cigarettes seized in a major crackdown on organised crime in Boston.
Police and Trading Standards raided five businesses as part of Operation Machinize, a national drive to tackle money laundering and cash-based crime.
Illicit tobacco was found at Teddys on Church Lane, Pound Plus on West Street and Boston Fruitis on Horncastle Road. At Pound Plus, officers - helped by sniffer dog Skye - uncovered three sacks of counterfeit cigarettes hidden in a car with its engine removed.
The two men, aged 25 and 34, were arrested and have been bailed pending further inquiries.
Two illegal workers were also found at the Fenside Road Chip Shop. Civil penalties of up to £60,000 per worker could follow.
Unsafe living conditions above two shops were also reported to housing and fire services.
“The sale of illegal tobacco is far more than a public health concern," said Inspector Ian Cotton, "it’s a gateway to complex criminal enterprises and Lincolnshire Police, along with key partners, are confronting these challenges head-on."
“The consequences ripple through our communities, manifesting in anti-social behaviour, underage sales, drug-related offences and economic harm to legitimate business."
Authorities say Operation Machinize will continue targeting high street businesses linked to organised crime.
