Lincolnshire veteran takes on Three Peaks again after cancer and PTSD battle
Spalding’s Colin Oakes says charity hikes helped him rebuild confidence
A Lincolnshire veteran who has battled cancer and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is preparing to take on the Three Peaks challenge again - to thank the charity that helped him rebuild his life.
Colin Oakes, 57, from Spalding, will begin the challenge with a climb up Scafell Pike in April, as part of Help for Heroes’ ‘Heroes Hikes’ series.
After nearly 30 years of service, Colin says his health struggles have been significant.
“I picked up a number of injuries, which at the time in true military fashion, were treated with painkillers and a slap on the back for reassurance," he said.
"On top of which, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and have been on a daily cocktail of medication for 15 years.”
He first took part in the hikes four years ago, and says they’ve had a lasting impact on both his physical and mental health.
“I've found the Heroes Hikes a great way to be out exercising at a personal pace, interact with others and experience the UK Countryside first-hand,” he said.
“We all encouraged each other along.”
Colin, who was medically discharged from the RAF in 2017, says the support has been vital, particularly when dealing with PTSD.
“Many veterans have hidden wounds, myself being one of them. A physical injury can heal over time but a hidden wound like anxiety or depression is a life struggle.”
He admits taking part wasn’t easy at first.
“It took all my strength to attend the hikes last year, but I’m so glad I did.”
Now, he’s taking on the challenge again — hoping to raise money and awareness for the charity that supported him when he needed it most.
And he has a message for anyone considering signing up:
“Don't forget to get your head up, shoulders back and take in the fresh air, your surroundings and the effort you're making on behalf of those who can no longer get outside and do what they loved.”
