Cervical screenings help find abnormal changes

A Lincolnshire nurse has been highlighting the importance of cervical screenings and reminding people to get checked when invited.

Cervical screenings check a sample of cells from the cervix for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).

If high risk types of HPV are found during screening, the sample of cells is also checked for abnormal cell changes.

If abnormal cells are found, they can be treated so they do not get a chance to turn into cervical cancer.

It's really important to come and get screened so we can look for early detection

Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Lincoln Lisa Freeman said:

"We're looking for cells and the HPV virus that we know in years to come could potentially turn into cervical cancer, so it's really important to come and get screened so we can look for early detection so that we can offer simple treatment to prevent cervical cancer in the future."

Lisa added:

"It can be scary but please make an appointment with your practice nurse who will be able to explain the procedure, support with any adjustments, anything that your not aware of if you want to bring a friend or want to bring a partner so they can explain what the test involves and what the results are likely to show."

The screening is offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64.
