We hear from a Lincolnshire mum about birth trauma

Lincolnshire mum speaks about the issue of birth trauma

Author: Andy MarshPublished 19th Feb 2025

It's appears there are many mums across Lincolnshire and Newark who experience PTSD as a result of complications during birth.

UK wide figures show that impacts around 1 in 20 mums.

Up to 30 thousand are affected by birth trauma every year

Zoe from Navenby near Lincoln endured a thirty six hour labour fraught with complications - her son Ruben then remained in hospital for six days after the birth.

She spoke to us about her experiences.

I think there should be more education around birth trauma and what is a normal birth

Zoe told us: "A real good part of coming to terms with what had happened is just talking to people and being really open about your experience."

"Also listening to other people's experiences."

"A lot of other people had experiences similar or even worse."

"I think it's about sharing your experiences and leaning on each other."

"I think there should be more education around birth trauma and what is a normal birth."

"That's something I didn't know."

"When I gave birth to Ruben I was like - is this normal?"

"Are these checks normal?".

"Should he be crying? - Should he be quiet?"

I think in that time you'd do anything for them to be OK - for your little one to be safe and healthy

"There's a lot of information that you don't necessarily know until you've been through it."

"When I was at school if there was a bit more education about birth - we have sex education - but we don't necessarily have education on what happens when you get pregnant"

"What are some of the things a woman experiences though pregnancy."

"When you give birth there's not as much education around that - which I find strange."

"I think it's just the unknown - you're just very unsure."

"What's happening?"

"Is this normal procedure?"

"Is this protocol or is this something that's not OK?"

"I think in that time you'd do anything for them to be OK - for your little one to be safe and healthy."

"I think it's very nerve wracking".
