The Lincolnshire Autistic Society is addressing the growing needs of individuals affected by autism diagnosis wait lists across the region, providing crucial support without requiring a formal diagnosis.

Anna Bartholomew, Chair of the Lincolnshire Autistic Society, emphasizes the importance of looking beyond diagnoses to meet the diverse needs of individuals. Founded in 1978, the society brings together professionals, support groups, and networks for collaborative, inclusive assistance.

The charity acknowledges the rising demand for autism diagnosis, she said "the reality is we're looking at past years of under-diagnosing. We can recognize that and offer them help, support, and advice".

Faced with barriers to diagnosis, the society prides itself on supporting individuals wherever they are, advocating for a person-centered approach: "For the Lincolnshire Autistic Society, we will help people wherever they are. So there's no diagnosis needed to access us."

From peer and parent support groups to collaboration with schools and workplaces, the society offers varied services tailored to individual needs, aiming to bridge gaps in access and promote inclusivity.

Anna discussed the significance of validating individual experiences and advocating for adjustments that make daily life easier for those seeking support. "It doesn't always have to be financial involvement. Sometimes it's just the simplest of things... validate them, find out what more we can do to help," she advises.

With around 2,000 families currently accessing services, the society is increasingly recognized for providing guidance and signposting, offering relief to those struggling with specific challenges even without a formal diagnosis.

Anna called for more research and funding to address the complexities of autism diagnosis, hoping for an inclusive future where everyone's needs are acknowledged. "Hopefully, things will become a bit more inclusive for everybody."

For individuals in Lincolnshire facing challenges associated with autism and ADHD, the Lincolnshire Autistic Society remains a vital resource, ensuring that needs are met, recognized, and supported.
