A former RAF nurse from near Lincoln will experience an emotional moment this Remembrance Sunday when she joins the Cenotaph Parade in London - side by side with her dad.

Helen Sirrell, 40, and her father, Malcolm Scott, 65, who both served in the RAF, will take part in the annual march-past at the Cenotaph on Sunday, 9 November.

They’ll join around 10,000 veterans, carers, and supporters honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Now a Veterans’ Clinical Advisor for Help for Heroes, Helen says this year’s event will hold special meaning - not just for her and her father, but for all who’ve served.

“As the nation remembers the fallen, I’m asking the public to make a promise to today’s veterans and their families - so every person who serves knows they’ll be supported when their service ends,” she said.

Helen joined the Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service after qualifying as a nurse in 2005. She served at MDHU Peterborough, RAF Honington and RAF Lossiemouth before a car accident led to her medical discharge in 2011.

After settling in Lincolnshire and starting a family, Helen joined Help for Heroes in 2024, continuing her mission to care for the military community.

“My whole life has been around the military,” Helen said. “Remembrance is a time to reflect and say thank you. Everyone who served deserves to be remembered - and today’s veterans need to know society still values them.”
