Lincoln’s Festival of History is back
The festival is taking place between the 3rd and 5th of May
People in Lincoln can expect to take a deep dive into the history of the city this bank holiday weekend, with Viking re-enactments, academic talks and much more.
The festival is returning for its second year, giving people the chance to explore Lincoln's heritage through various activities around the city.
Simon Colburn, assistant director of health and environment at Lincoln City Council said:
“Its supposed to be light-hearted, but really it’s to encourage people to come and engage with the history of the city, whether they have a favourite period or whether it's just generally the fact that we have some amazing historic buildings and stories.”
There’s the opportunity to try your hand at armoury drills and weaponry at the Knight Academy at St Paul in the bail or you can immerse yourself in a re-enactment of Vikings battling away in the Cornhill Square.
“There really is something for everyone,” said Simon.
“I think even if you have a passion for the city, there’s still so many layers to unpick and always something to learn”.
It's hoped the festival will help boost tourism in the local area.
Simon Colburn says:
“It's important that we put things on for those tourists because they will come and spend money on overnight stays and food and drink as well as shopping and cups of coffee.
“And that really does play an important part in the tourism sector in the city, which drives a big chunk of our economy”
This year is set to be bigger and better than last year, with new additions to the weekend including a classic car show in the City Square.
Vintage cars will be on show from all different eras, with the owners there to answer any questions visitors may have.
The weekend will allow people a chance to see Lincoln through a new perspective and understand the history that the city contains.
Simon said “It helps us feel part of our place and to associate and remind us about the history of Lincoln and what some of those old buildings were and how important Lincoln has been and continues to on the national and global market.
“We have such a rich history and some real treasures in the city which should be explored.”
