Workers at Briggs Marine in Immingham are set to go on strike today after the GMB union announced industrial action.

The strike will begin on Monday, 9th March, with nearly fifty workers expected to participate.

The conflict arises after accusations that company bosses dismissed employees outside of due process, which the union described as 'a disgrace.'

Immingham Docks is home to one of the UK's largest petroleum product terminals, where workers handle imports and exports of essential fuels from around the globe.

Andy Groves, GMB Organiser, criticized the company's practices, saying, "Briggs Marine bosses have been playing fast and loose with our members jobs for too long."

"The UK needs its petrochemical workers now more than ever. For this company to dismiss workers without any due process is a disgrace."

He emphasized the vital role of these workers: "These workers handle some of the most important petrochemical products, from aviation fuel to the essential products required by UK industry."

Groves attributed the company's decisions to financial motivations, contradicting a backdrop of giant Ministry of Defence contracts and increased demand, suggesting that the move targets the workers and their union.

He urged the company's leadership to address the issues promptly: "Company top brass need to participate in the resolution to these issues, get round the table and treat these workers with respect - and quickly!"
