A 300 million pound regeneration project for the former RAF Scampton base COULD be secured by the end of the year

It follows what the leader of West Lindsay District council calls a 'positive' meeting with the Government.

The authority is in talks to buy the site after plans to house asylum seekers there were abandoned last year

There could however still be competition for the site,

Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh, Lincoln MP Hamish Falconer and West Lindsey District Council leader Trevor Young met with Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum in Westminster.

The former airbase is seen as vital due to its historic connections with the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron, and its economic potential relating to defence, air and space.

We can bring it back into really good use

The council launched its bid to buy the site in December, arguing that it should be the preferred bidder.

West Lindsey District council leader Trevor Young told us:

"I think there's one or two more legal issues to get addressed but the opportunity lies in the Government's hands in terms of seeing the opportunity for that site - working with the local council and working together to get this deal done."

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity in terns of development on the site."

"At least 300 million pounds - an aerospace type high tech defence industry moving in."

"We know in terms of one or two of the buildings on the site - we've got concerns about them."

"The runway in particular in terms of it having no maintenance on that runway for the last couple of years."

"That's really important to us and we want to work with the Government in terms of actually ensuring that heritage is restored."

"We can bring it back into really good use."
