138 driving offences recorded in A1 crackdown near Grantham
Three people were arrested during Operation Tramline
Lincolnshire Police stopped 118 vehicles and recorded 138 driving offences during a five-day crackdown on unsafe driving and vehicles on the A1 near Grantham.
The operation, called Operation Tramline, ran from Monday 19th October to Friday 23rd October 2026.
Three people were arrested, and fines given to drivers came to a final total of more than £3,000.
Operation Tramline is run jointly by police forces and National Highways to identify unsafe driving and vehicles and to educate motorists.
It has been running across the UK since 2015.
How the operation worked
National Highways loaned a specialist HGV camera cab to Lincolnshire Police during the week.
The unmarked vehicle's higher viewpoint means officers can spot and record dangerous behaviour behind the wheel.
Teams from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) also carried out roadside checks on the A1.
They stopped a total of 118 vehicles over the five-day period, including HGVs and private vehicles.
Offences recorded
Drivers were stopped for a range of offences including:
- 35 for not wearing a seatbelt
- 30 for construction and use of vehicles
- 15 for using a mobile phone while driving
- six for driving with an insecure load
- five for no insurance
- five for driving without due care
- one for drink or drug driving
What police and National Highways said:
Inspector Jase Baxter, from the Specialist Operations Unit at Lincolnshire Police, said: "The majority of road users obey the rules of the road. But we still see too many examples of unsafe, illegal and dangerous behaviours once drivers are behind the wheel. Speeding, using a mobile phone, drink and drug driving or simply not taking care can cause road collisions and ruin lives forever."
Inspector Baxter also said: "We run different Roads Policing operations at different locations around our county throughout the year. Operation Tramline gives us the platform to identify offences that wouldn't be as easily identified without the use of the National Highways HGV."
He added: "This along with our other operations allows us to continue to try and keep our roads safe and talk to drivers. We will not tolerate dangerous vehicles or unsafe drivers in Lincolnshire."
Marie Biddulph, Regional Safety Programme manager at National Highways, said: "We all need to play our part in keeping our roads as safe as they can be, so we are trying to encourage motorists to consider their driving and prioritise safety on our roads."
She also said: "To do that, we are working with partners like Lincolnshire Police to address unsafe driving behaviour, helping to make our roads safer for everyone. Operation Tramline is one of the ways we target that minority of drivers who continue to put themselves and others at risk."
