Government Pledge to End Rough Sleeping by Christmas Welcomed in Grantham
Councillor Charmaine Morgan says long-term support is essential as new funding announced
A Grantham councillor has welcomed fresh Government plans to end rough sleeping by Christmas, but says much more is needed to tackle the root causes of homelessness in the area.
Charmaine Morgan, who represents Grantham St Vincents, says rough sleeping has been a major problem across the town, especially in parks like Wyndham Park, Dysart Park, and The Paddock.
She described how hundreds of local people have been affected by anti-social behaviour linked to rough sleeping and stressed the importance of supporting those living on the streets.
Councillor Morgan said she is pleased the council’s efforts are being backed by the Government, but warned that long-term solutions and proper one-to-one support are vital.
“It’s going to take longer to provide lasting solutions for them, but at least in the short term, providing a roof over their heads is very important,” she added.
The Government has announced over one hundred million pounds in extra funding this winter to get people off the streets, along with a further three hundred and forty million for longer-term accommodation.
However, Councillor Morgan says councils like South Kesteven still need more information on how the pledge will be delivered, and enough funding to make real change.
