Funding confirmed for A46 roundabout and dualling
The Government has also confirmed funding for the A46 Newark Bypass
Major upgrades to one of Lincoln’s busiest roundabouts are ‘crucial’ for the area, residents have said.
The A46 Nettleham roundabout could get a footbridge over the eastern branch, along with an extra roundabout lane, and new exit and entrance lanes to reduce congestion.
Nettleham residents have enthusiastically backed the plan at a consultation event on Monday (July 7), saying it would reconnect the village with the city.
"crucial"
Chris Williams, who has lived in Nettleham for 39 years, said: “I am absolutely delighted by the scheme as a whole. I used to walk from Nettleham to Lincoln, but I wouldn’t consider trying to cross that roundabout nowadays.
“Cars come off there at horrible speed. The footbridge will be crucial for the village, and will encourage people to walk across again.”
The project is being carried out by Lincolnshire County Council, with funding from the government.
On top of this, the Government has also confirmed funding for the A46 Newark Bypass which will, subject to planning permission, also reduce travel time and see faster commutes for drivers.
The scheme would aim to boost economic growth across the region, improving road connections for commuters, businesses and freight, and connect the Midlands to key ports such as Grimsby and Humber.
"vital"
The Government is also continuing to support two local road schemes across the East Midlands, vital to connecting and growing communities.
These are not major motorway or A-roads, but junctions, bypasses and traffic easing projects which will ease thousands of congested commutes, unlocking further housing and jobs.
The A511 Growth Corridor will see a package of upgrades, including improvements to 8 junctions, a dual carriageway and an extension to Bardon Link road.
A new dual carriageway will also be created for the North Hykeham Relief Road, south of Lincoln.
It comes as the Government greenlights over fifty road and rail upgrades across the country, as part of the £92 billion of transport investment in the Spending Review.
