A fire in Newark’s Yorke Drive displaces residents from their homes
Emergency services and community groups rally to support those affected

A fire broke out at a residential block on Yorke Drive, Newark on Sunday, 19th July 2026, leaving residents seeking urgent support.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nottinghamshire Police, and Cadent responded, helping local council officers assist displaced residents.
Nine fire engines arrived to find the block of flats - which was 20 flats across three stories - was on fire.
The fire is believed to have started in the stair well and spread all the way to the roof.
There were no reported injuries but kittens were found and rescued by firefighters.
A fire investigation has concluded that the fire was most likely caused by a bonfire which had spread to the building.
Emergency accommodation has been arranged for those affected, with Beaumont Walk Community Centre opening its doors as a safe space.
Councillor Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, expressed gratitude to the emergency services and local organisations for their swift response.
The council is working closely with households to provide necessary support while waiting for further guidance on when residents can retrieve belongings from their homes.
The local community has shown overwhelming support, with various shops and groups providing clothing, food, and essentials to those in need.
Nottinghamshire County Council has also activated its Crisis Resilience Fund, with residents being assisted to access this support.
