A Nottinghamshire farmer strangled his father before burying him on the family farm and taking his own life after a "blazing row" over finances, an inquest heard.

Charles Wright, 52, reportedly "saw a flash of red" during the argument with his father, 82-year-old Brian Wright, at Hall Farm near Newark, shortly before he killed himself in November 2022.

The inquest at Nottingham Coroner’s Court revealed a voice message left by Charles for the police in which he expressed anger over his father's plans to potentially replace him and alter family farm arrangements.

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow from Nottinghamshire Police told the court: "Charles stated that he had killed his father and intended to kill himself" after a financial disagreement had escalated.

Brian Wright had been reported missing when he failed to attend a hospital appointment with his wife, and his body was discovered buried on the farm four days later.

On November 22nd, before his own death, Charles allegedly drove his vehicle at his brother James Wright "causing injury," according to Ms Burrow's testimony.

Senior coroner for Nottinghamshire Mairin Casey concluded Brian Wright's death was an unlawful killing and that his son died by suicide.
