Boston Borough Council has commenced enhancement works on Scalp Road in Fishtoft to improve access to significant historical sites and attractions.

Starting today, 20th May, the upgrades focus on improving the road leading to the public car park, which provides access to the Pilgrim Fathers Memorial.

The road has been challenging to navigate due to potholes and subsidence, making vehicle access difficult for visitors.

The Memorial marks the location linked to the Pilgrim Fathers' 1607 thwarted journey and subsequent imprisonment, contributing to Boston's foundation in Massachusetts in 1630.

In addition to the Memorial, Scalp Road offers access to attractions such as the Structures on the Edge artwork and the King Charles III Coastal Path, with striking views of The Haven and local wildlife.

Local ward councillors collaborated with the council’s Cabinet to secure funding from its tourism portfolio, aligning investment with long-term ambitions, especially toward 2030—the 400th anniversary of Boston's American counterpart.

The project is part of broader efforts to invest in the borough’s heritage, including the renovation of the Five Lamps and the improvement works at Boston Guildhall funded by over £400,000 from the Museum Estate and Development Fund.

Councillor Sarah Sharpe, portfolio holder for heritage, culture, and tourism, commented: “This is a really important project for Boston as a whole, both to tell the story of its past and to help improve its offer for the future.

Scalp Road provides vital access to a site of international historic significance, as well as key attractions and walking routes, and I cannot wait for these works to be complete so more people can easily visit and enjoy the area.

I’m delighted we have been able to make this investment as a council, and to literally pave the way to the place that helped pave the way for Boston’s global story. Thank you to my fellow ward members, portfolio holders and the council’s officers who have worked so hard together to secure a positive solution to this long-standing issue.”

Local contractors will carry out the road works over the coming week, during which vehicle access will be restricted.

Updates on progress and completion will be available on the council's social media channels and website.
