A paint recycling scheme, now operating in Bourne and Spalding, say the scheme is important for the environment and the local community.

It's a scheme where leftover paint is dropped off at Waste Recycling Centres across the county.

Other residents and community groups can then take any paint they might need for their DIY projects from the store for free.

Environmentally it's had a massive impact in the county

According to Community RePaint, each year an estimated 50 million litres of paint goes to waste in the UK.

This leftover paint is either thrown away or stored in homes or garages despite over 50% of it still being usable.

Their mission is to end this by offering a solution for leftover paint and making it available for reuse.

Particularly in Lincolnshire we saw a huge amount of paint coming through the disposal

Rachel Stamp, the Waste Partnership and Projects Manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said:

"Particularly in Lincolnshire we saw a huge amount of paint coming through the disposal route, and we thought we need to do something better with it; we need to reuse and push it further up the waste hierarchy."

"Since we started the scheme just before Christmas, we now have 9, soon to be 10, sites live, and we've diverted over 10,000 litres of paint from disposal."

"So environmentally it's had a massive impact in the county."

"This scheme isn't only open to residents; community groups can come along and help themselves to paint for their projects."
