A woman has died and a man has been left in a critical condition after the pair got into difficulty in the sea while attempting to rescue their dog in Thornton Cleveleys.

Emergency services were called shortly after 8.31pm on Saturday (30 May) after the ambulance service alerted police that two people had been recovered from the water by HM Coastguard near Fleetwood Beach Cafe.

Police attended the scene and established that a man and a woman, both believed to be in their 60s, had entered the sea after their dog became stuck.

The pair were treated at the scene by emergency responders before being taken to hospital. The woman was later pronounced dead, while the man remains in a critical condition receiving treatment.

The dog was recovered safely and was unharmed.

Police said efforts to identify and inform the woman's next of kin are ongoing.

Officers confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
