Blackpool, alongside Milton Keynes, Sheffield, and Wrexham have today been revealed as the four places competing for the UK City of Culture 2029 title.

The shortlisted locations will vie for the prestigious title that offers significant benefits, including increased investment, access to cultural activities, and job creation.

The winner stands to receive a £10 million prize, with the announcement scheduled for early 2027.

This competition is a vital part of the government's drive to boost pride and economic growth across various regions of the UK.

Each shortlisted area will receive £125,000 to advance their bid for the title.

The finalists were selected by the UK City of Culture expert advisory panel, chaired by Sir Phil Redmond, from a longlist of nine applications.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighted the vibrant culture of each shortlisted area, wishing them luck and acknowledging the valuable bids from places not making the shortlist.

Previous winners like Bradford, Hull, Coventry, and Derry-Londonderry have demonstrated the benefits, including additional investment and community pride.

Stephen Kinnock, Welsh Secretary of State, expressed enthusiasm for Wrexham's entry, while leaders from the other shortlisted places lauded their regions' unique cultural assets.

Councillor Lynn Williams MBE, Leader of Blackpool Council, expressed pride in Blackpool’s rich cultural heritage, featuring music, dance, and arts that make the town unique.

Councillor Jane Carr, Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, remarked on the city’s creative and cultural potential as it approaches its 60th anniversary.

Councillor Fran Belbin, Leader of Sheffield City Council, highlighted Sheffield’s creativity and community spirit as key elements of its bid.

Joanna Knight OBE, Chair of the Wrecsam2029 bid, emphasised the potential impact of Wrexham’s bid on Welsh culture as a whole, encouraging community support to bring the title home.

Before reaching this stage, the nine longlisted cities, which included Inverness-Highland, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Swindon, received £60,000 grants to strengthen their applications.
