A man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s have died following a collision between a VW Golf and a Volvo HGV on Hall Lane near Wrightington Hospital.

The accident occurred just after 8am on Sunday July 12th 2026, when the Golf, which was heading east, apparently failed to navigate a bend and collided head-on with the oncoming HGV.

Emergency services responded to the incident, but despite their efforts, both occupants of the Golf suffered serious injuries and later died.

The driver of the HGV was unharmed but is being treated as a witness to the crash.

Sgt Martin Wilcock, Senior Investigating Officer, has issued an appeal for information.

Sgt Wilcock said, “Very sadly, this collision has resulted in two people losing their lives and my thoughts are with their loved ones.

I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened and who has not yet spoken with police, or anyone with footage such as dashcam, CCTV or Ring doorbell to get in touch.

I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the VW Golf driving in the moments before the collision.”

The road was closed to facilitate the emergency response but has since been reopened.
