New Respect Orders in Lancashire to tackle anti-social behaviour

Strengthened powers aim to address persistent offenders and improve community safety

Lancashire is set to see the introduction of new Respect Orders as part of efforts to combat persistent anti-social behaviour, according to Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw.

The Respect Orders bring stronger powers to police and local authorities, enabling them to more effectively address repeat offenders whose actions cause distress in neighbourhoods.

From October, under the Crime and Policing Act, these orders will be implemented across England and Wales.

The Respect Orders grant courts the ability to ban offenders from specific areas, restrict behaviours such as public drinking in known hotspots, and require participation in programmes that address issues like substance abuse and anger management.

Breaching a Respect Order will be a criminal offence, potentially leading to arrest, fines, or even imprisonment.

Clive Grunshaw, Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire, expressed his support for the initiative, stating:

"Anti-social behaviour can have a lasting impact on people's lives, making residents feel unsafe in their own communities and damaging confidence in local areas.

"These new Respect Orders are a welcome addition to the tools available to police and local authorities, giving them stronger powers to tackle the small number of persistent offenders who cause misery for others.

"Crucially, the orders combine robust enforcement with opportunities to address the underlying causes of offending, helping to break the cycle of anti-social behaviour and prevent further harm.

"Tackling anti-social behaviour remains a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan, and I know how important this issue is to residents across Lancashire. I look forward to working with Lancashire Constabulary, councils and community safety partners to ensure these new powers are used effectively to make our neighbourhoods safer and improve public confidence."

The launch of these Respect Orders aligns with existing measures aimed at enhancing responses to anti-social behaviour, including police authority to seize vehicles linked to disruptive activities.

Together, these initiatives aim to provide greater community protection and hold offenders accountable for their actions.
