Lancashire Police are appealing for information following reports of the vandalism of headstones at St James Church in Leyland.

It was reported on Friday 18th April that along with the headstones the church itself, on Slater Lane, had been damaged.

Reports suggest that around 40 gravestones were daubed with offensive graffiti.

Lancashire Police said: "We would like to speak with the person in the footage in connection with the incidents. We know that this footage isn't of the highest quality, but are hoping that someone will recognise them.

"This is being treated as a hate crime and is being taken incredibly seriously. Understandably, this has caused a great amount of upset to the parishioners and the wider community, and we would encourage anyone who has information or footage to come forward and speak to us."

"If you live near to the church, please check any CCTV or doorbell cameras. If you have any footage that you think we need to see, let us know through the appropriate channels.

"If you recognise them, or have information to assist our enquiries, please contact us on 101 quoting log 0399 of 18th April. or email [email protected]."

In a letter to the parish the Archbishop of York said: "For this precious holy ground to be so appallingly desecrated is deeply shocking.

“Easter should be a time of celebration and joy. It saddens me greatly that this Easter your own celebrations may feel a little muted.

“Yet, of course, the story of Easter is the story of God’s triumph over sin and darkness. “Because God raised Jesus from the dead, we know that no power on earth can undermine his mercy and love.

“I hope it is a small comfort to know that, alongside many others, I am holding you and your church in my prayers this Easter.

"I am praying that despite the horrors of Good Friday, your faith in the resurrection might be strengthened and that you will all experience anew the power of the Lord at work in your lives.”
