Man charged after six people at Newton hospital attacked with weapon

A 20-year-old man has been charged after six people were reportedly attacked with a weapon at Newton Community Hospital in December.

On 30th December 2025, emergency services received a report that a man was attacking people and damaging property inside the hospital.

Police said six people needed treatment in hospital and at walk-in centres for injuries including head lacerations, injuries to their arms and hands and bruising.

Omar Momand was arrested and detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

Momand, who's originally from Afghanistan but now lives in Collingwood Court, Bradlegh Road, Newton-le-Willows, has been charged with:

  • Four counts of section 18 wounding
  • Attempted section 18 wounding
  • Section 47 assault
  • Affray
  • Criminal damage
  • Possession of an offensive weapon
  • Possession of a controlled class B drug

He's been remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance today (18th March).
