Kyle Tyson has been sentenced to nine years for attempting to rape and sexually assaulting a young girl at a funeral wake in Preston.

Tyson was 17 years old when he committed the offences against a girl he knew, who was only 12 at the time, in May 2022.

His actions significantly impacted the young victim, disrupting her education and mental wellbeing.

In court, a Victim Personal Statement revealed the lasting trauma experienced by the girl, including severe anxiety that kept her from attending school.

She stated, “Having to report the abuse and go through the criminal justice process has been difficult. Speaking about what happened has forced me to relive some of the most painful experiences of my life."

Tyson, now 20, was found guilty by a jury of attempted rape and sexual assault after a trial in June.

He appeared at Preston Crown Court last Friday, where he received a nine-year sentence, comprising six years in custody and three years on an extended licence.

Tyson has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and is subject to a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Detective Constable Nikki Houghton of Lancashire Police described the ordeal as "horrendous and traumatic" for the victim.

DC Houghton expressed hope that the conviction and sentence provide some measure of justice and encouraged victims of sexual offences to report them, promising support and investigation by Lancashire Police.
