Night transport operations to halt at PLP Astley yard in response to noise concerns
Whistl agrees with residents and Wigan Council to cease night operations temporarily
Whistl has agreed to pause nighttime transport operations at the PLP Astley yard starting 7th September 2026.
This decision follows a meeting on 26th August 2026 involving the Astley Warehouse Action Group, Wigan Council, and Whistl.
The move is in response to concerns from Astley residents regarding nighttime noise levels.
While transport operations will be on hold at night, mail and parcel processing will continue within the depot.
Whistl is adjusting its operations to meet customer commitments despite the halt in nighttime transport.
The Astley Warehouse Action Group is currently reviewing a second proposal from Whistl regarding additional noise reduction measures and methods to assess their effectiveness.
Whistl and the action group plan to meet regularly to evaluate progress in reducing noise and disruption faced by Astley residents.
Existing noise mitigation measures will remain in place, including the use of quieter on-site vehicles and installation of noise monitors.
There will also be restrictions on nighttime refuelling and fuel tanker access.
These measures are under continuous review, with direct feedback from residents helping to identify improvements.
A spokesperson for Whistl commented, "We remain committed to being a responsible neighbour and supporting the local Astley residents who need and deserve to have their concerns addressed. We are confident that the measures agreed will go a long way towards reducing nighttime noise, while we continue to work to find a longer-term solution between Whistl, Astley residents, Wigan Council and the site owner, PLP."
