A murder investigation has been initiated after a man in his 40s was fatally struck by a car in Accrington.

The incident occurred shortly after 10pm on Wednesday, 22nd April, at the junction of Blackburn Road and Birch Street in the town centre.

The victim suffered serious injuries after being hit by a VW Passat and, despite medical intervention, he later died in hospital.

The car did not stop at the scene but was found abandoned on Barden Road and has been recovered for forensic examination.

Police are appealing for information and footage related to the investigation, which includes any interactions between the victim and the occupants of the car prior to the incident.

Det Supt Mark Dickinson from the Force Major Investigation Team said: “This incident has led to a man losing his life and first and foremost our thoughts remain with his loved ones.

"We have a dedicated team of officers assigned to this case who have been carrying out enquiries in the local area since last night and who are continuing to do so today."

He encouraged any witnesses or individuals with mobile phone footage, CCTV, or dashcam from the Birch Street area to contact authorities, especially if they have seen the VW Passat after the incident.

To enhance community safety, reassurance patrols have been increased in the area.

Det Supt Dickinson further urged those with knowledge of who is responsible to contact the police, acknowledging potential reluctance to come forward.
